Sir Thomas de Townshend B: 1360 Raynham, Norwich, Norfolk, England D: 04/01/1421 White Friars Church, Fleet St, London, England M: Agnes Alice Townshend B: 1365 D: . A small group of Carmelites reached England in 1242. Eventually some 40 Carmelite communities were established across Britain, Carmelite religious house, known as the White Friars, that lay here between about 1247 and 1538. Only a crypt remains today of what was once a late 14th century priory belonging to a Carmelite order popularly known as the White Friars because of the white mantles they wore on formal occasions. During its heyday, the priory sprawled the area from Fleet Street to the Thames. At its western end was the Temple and to its east was Water Lane (now called Whitefriars Street). A church, cloisters, garden and cemetery were housed in the ground. The Whitefriars crypt, a vaulted cellar of the medieval friary survives under the modern 65 Fleet Street building. The 14th-century cellar was probably part of the White Friars prior's mansion. The medieval remains were lifted up on a crane during the construction of the modern building in 1991 and then replaced (in a slightly altered location); the cellar or 'crypt' can be viewed from Magpie Alley to the south of Fleet Street.
The remains of White Friars
The photo, by Vic Keegan in 2017, shows all that remains of a priory run by Carmelite friars, who became known as the White Friars for on occasion wearing white mantles over their brown habits. It can trace its origins back to 1253 after the friars arrived in London, having been expelled by Saracens from the Holy Land, where their order was founded.

10~William Asa Townsend 1906–1979 Darwin General Cemetery Jingili, Darwin City, Northern Territory, Australia. M: 1926 Maria Maddox 1906–2004. The Townsend family is one of many American families who, in the 1960s, couldn't resist the challenges and opportunities in northern Australia, their homestead on Tanumbirini Station. Tanumbirini is the latest of stations the Townsends have owned in the Territory since emigrating from the United States in 1962. First, they took up land near Darwin six years after William Asa Townsend and one of his three sons, Charlie, first came to Australia in search of suitable pastoral country. Around 1962, he purchased the Stapleton cattle station. The Townsends were successful cattlemen and thought that the Northern Territory offered promising opportunities for anyone willing to invest time, money and hard work. An article appeared in the National Geographic Magazine in 1973/1974 about the Northern Territory and mentioned Ray and his wife, Elsie, and their life in Australia. More recently however, a book published in 2012 "Cowboy Heaven, The Townsends in Florida and the Northern Territory" written by Australian authors, Peter and Sheila Forrest provides a detailed account of their accomplishments in their adopted country. LaBelle Downs Station got its name from LaBelle, Florida, and as of 1997, the Townsends owned LaBelle Downs and Keri Station. Originally a part of neighbouring Stapleton Station, La Belle was taken up by the Townsend family in 1962. In 2001, the 610 square kilometres (236 sq mi) property was placed on the market by the Townsend family partnership. It was stocked with 10,500 head of Brahman cattle.
Tanumbirini Station is a pastoral lease on formerly what were Kotandji lands that operates as a cattle station in Northern Territory of Australia. Tanumbirini also shares a boundary with Nutwood Downs to the west, Beetaloo Station to the south, Broadmere to the east and the Alawa Aboriginal Land Trust to the north. The Carpentaria Highway passes through the property. In 2002 the property was acquired by Henry and Maria Townsend. The 5,000 square kilometres property had been suffering from overgrazing and the black soil plans were completely denuded of grass. At the time it was stocked with 10,000 cattle with an additional 2,000 to 3,000 feral cattle. The Townsends redeveloped the property and changed the management practices. They also managed to increase the stock on the property to 23,000 head of cattle before selling in 2007.

4~Light Townsend B: 05/01/1798 GA D: 03/17/1870 SC M: 1838 Mary Ann Carloss B: 1820 D: 1858, d/o Dr. Robertson Carloss and Wilhemina Amelia Charlotte Poelnitz, and granddaughter of Baron Charles von Poelnitz (b. 1734). Light was not a young man when he married Mary Ann Carloss, twenty-two years his junior. In the early 1850's they built a large Greek Revival plantation house where they reared a family of three daughters and one son. Judging from the property he willed to each of his children, he had become a sizable landowner before his death. As John Townsend tells it, “Grandfather owned a lot of land and left each of his three daughters a big farm, all adjoining, near Blenheim. Papa always told me his father's property joined Major Drake at the branch near Lower Marlboro school where C. P. Poleston has a fish pond. The line went from that branch back across to Jennies branch (behind the McCallum home place). Aunt Hattie Irby, so I was told, inherited all the property from the road running by the Townsend house to the Kinney Bay Place, and over as far as the creek on the Poleston farm.

In December of 1835, the ambush and massacre of Army Major Francis Langhorne Dade and two companies of soldiers by Indians lead by Osceola near Tampa began the Second Seminole War. This war did not end until 1842 when the last bands of Indians and their chiefs were relocated to Arkansas via New Orleans. Allen Townsend as well as many other local residents joined the militia that was formed in Madison County to protect the local settlers from Indian raids. There were apparently no major battles in the area of Madison County Florida during the Second Seminole War. Allen enrolled 10 Dec 1835 for 78 days in Capt. Thomas Livingston's Company, Florida Mounted Militia, mustering out on 25 Feb 1836. He was drafted in Capt. William T. Townsend's Company, McCant's Battalion on 11 Mar 1836 at Charles Ferry for 4 months, being mustered out of service 14 Jul 1836 at Fort Dabny, Suwannee Old Town. He enrolled 28 Jul 1836 at San Pedro for 4 months in Capt. Townsend's Company, 13th Regiment 1st Brigade, Florida Mounted Militia, being mustered out on 30 Nov 1836.

David moved to Irwin County (now Lowndes) Georgia about 1824/25 with his brothers John, Allen, and Jesse. About 1838 he moved into Madison County Florida based on his having bought land there at that time. This land was just south of Cherry Lake, bordering land owned by his brother Benjamin, and very near land of his brother Allen. In the 1840 Census David is listed as owning 14 male and 26 female slaves. By the mid 1840's he likely moved to the area of Troy Springs in present day Lafayette County Florida, as he sold his holding near Cherry Lake to his brothers. He has not been found in the 1850 census, however he and his family is in the 1860 Census of Lafayette County. He served as a Probate Judge beginning in 1857 and Circuit Judge from 1868 to 1875 in Lafayette County. David is buried in Maypop Cemetery, Lafayette County, Florida along with his wife Nancy.

Townsend Plantation
Ever since Benedictus Townsend and his two sons settled on the east side of the Great Pee Dee, in what for a long time was known as Marlborough District, there have been Townsend’s in that area, the sons were named John and Light. Though there were land grants to many of the older Townsend’s, the one who apparently built up the large estate held by the family for many years was Light Townsend (1798-1870). He was one of fourteen children born to John and Keziah Hays Townsend, who lived four miles east of Blenheim on what is now the Cousins family property, but for years was known as the “Kinney Bay Place”. Light was the third son, and after a stay in North Carolina where he was overseer of a large plantation, he returned to Marlboro and not only acquired his father's property (when other members of the family moved to Florida), but began building up his own estate. On one of Light's trips to Florida to visit his sisters and brothers he brought back a pocket full of acorns from the coniferous oaks and planted these in the yard of his new home. Many came up, and some of the huge, old trees are still living, though in deplorable condition as is the long abandoned house. The plantation house consisted of eight main rooms (20 X 20) and a detached kitchen. There were only two closets in the house. The kitchen had an open fireplace and a walk-in pantry. Just off the dining room was a butler's pantry, as well as a storage pantry with shelves from floor to ceiling to take care of the many items canned and preserved on the farm. In 1912 John Robertson added two bathrooms, which formed bays on the south side of the house. In later years John Rogers added a large family room, which connected the kitchen with the main house. Brick used in construction were made on the plantation, and the wide pine siding was all hand beaded. The interior millwork was of oak. Rift pine flooring was used throughout, while the walls were all plastered. The fourteen-foot high ceilings downstairs and the twelve foot ceilings upstairs were all ten inch boards. The house sat within a twenty-five acre fenced grove. The yard immediately around the house was enclosed with a picket fence for many years. The outbuildings included the commissary, a smoke house, light house (for the carbide generator), pump house, shop, carriage house (later used as a garage) and, of course, the traditional "outhouse" of the time. There was at one end of the grove the cow lot and horse lot with its gear house and associated barns along with a tall brick wall protecting the deep, open well. On the other side of the grove, just outside the fence, was the cotton gin with its seed house, the saw mill and a fertilizer warehouse. Wide porches on three sides of the house and the front step abutments were the ideal home for large potted ferns of various kinds. These were carried over year to year in the "pit" - an entrenchment on the south side of the house near the fruit orchard. This was constructed with brick walls and covered with heavy timbers, which could be opened on sunny days in the winter. According to various records, Light owned more than four hundred slaves to work his holdings. Interesting stories have been handed down about how he caught wild hogs in Big Hilson Bay to help feed the slaves. He also supposedly had a dog trained to patrol the slave quarters, and if a strange slave showed up, the dog would go to Light's bedroom and awaken him, and lead him straight to the cottage where the stranger was.
