On 12/24/1942 a B-26 B was taking off from MacDill field in Tampa was returning to base but the field was fogged in. The aircraft had taken off from Memphis TN on a return leg of a night navigation flight to MacDill field. Low ceilings were reported at MacDill and tower personnel advised the pilot to go to Hendricks field in Sebring, Fla. The crew acknowledged these instructions and flew over the Avon Park field assuming it was Hendricks field which was in reality, 9 miles east of there. They called Hendricks tower and requested landing instructions and were advised to use runway 22. This caused confusion to the crew. The pilot called again and were advised to use runway 18. The pilot flew the pattern for runway 22 and turned for approach. Landing gear was lowered , along with the flaps. The pilot began his decent soon entering thick fog. Visability became very poor and the aircraft flew into the ground 440 yards NE of the runway. The landing gear collapsed from the impact and shortly afterwards impacted palmetto bushes and thick stumps seriously damaging the plane. The crumpled plane slid along the ground and came to rest in a drainage ditch. Pilot Ralph E Morrison and PFC Ralph Edward Thomas were killed . There were many heros from WW II, not all of them made it to combat. There were more airmen killed in training accidents than were killed in combat. Let us never forget the sacrifice of these soldiers.

8~Mary Olive Thomas M: 1943 Frank Winchester Towers Sr 1917 MA 2016 FL, s/o Everett and Jane Winchester Towers. He was stationed at Camp Blanding, Florida. He was commissioned an officer in the Army and was transferred to the 30th Infantry Division just prior to the Normandy Invasion of World War II. At that time he became a liaison officer and held this position for the duration of the war. He left the US Army with the rank of Captain. During his service in the military, Mr. Towers received many awards for recognition of valor and bravery, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Clusters. He served one term as a Trustee on the Alachua County School Board, and was later employed by the University of Florida, from which he retired in 1979. He was the National President and Executive Secretary of the 30th Infantry Division Veterans of World War II Association. He co-founded Les Fleurs de la Memorie, a foundation in France dedicated to caring for the graves of American soldiers who are interred in France and Belgium. He became the consummate historian of the 30th Infantry Division. He was a Camp Blanding Museum Association charter member. He received presentation of the Order of Orange Nassau, from Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. He has been the only non-Dutch individual to receive this award. And, for having served in WWII in France, he was awarded the distinction of Knight of the French Legion of Honor.
Frank Towers, a U.S. officer who helped liberate 2,500 Jews from a train bound for extermination at the end of World War II, The division’s liaison officer, Lt. Frank Winchester Towers, who wasn’t Jewish, orchestrated the logistical side of the dramatic rescue. He mobilized ambulances, jeeps and trucks, and made sure the released prisoners were taken to a safe place. He navigated through side roads, which he knew well, and took them to the nearby town of Hillersleben, where a German air force camp was located. The Americans set up a hospital in the town to treat the liberated Jews, stealing medical equipment from German stores....
