From the Battles of Dunbar and Worcester in 1650 and 1651, POW’s in America:
“Few of the Scots who survived Worcester ever returned home. Thousands of prisoners were “driven like cattle” to London. As one witness described the convoy, “all of them [were] stript, many of them cutt, some without stockings or shoes and scarce so much left upon them as to cover their nakedness, eating peas and handfuls of straw in their hands which they had pulled upon the fields as they passed.” At temporary prison camps in London and other cities, many prisoners died of starvation, disease and infection, while the Council of State debated what to do with the defeated multitudes. A thousand prisoners were put to work draining the fens in East Anglia; 1500 shipped out to the gold mines of Guinea; others were sent to labor in the Barbadoes and Virginia; and in November 1651, 272 Scots were herded aboard the John and Sara, bound for New England.”

2~Daniel Machoe II (see below) B: 1626 Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland D: 10/24/1706 E. Haddam, Ct Colony. He changed his name to Daniel Cone on his arrival in America. M: 1660 in Hartford, CT to Mahitable Spencer B: 1642 Lynn, Essex, Mass Colony D: 1691 Haddam, Ct., daughter of Ensign Jarrad/Gerard Spencer 1614-1685 (Jared immigrated with his three older brothers, William, Thomas & Michael Spencer to Cambridge (now Newton), Mass. in 1632 in the party of Rev. Thomas Hooker. He and his brothers were there in 1634, but Jared and Michael removed to Lynn, Mass, while William & Thomas remained in Cambridge and later went to Hartford, CT) and Hannah Joannis Hills 1618-1683. He became an Officer & served in the Scottish army as a loyalist to King Charles II and fought in the Battle of Dunbarin 1650. After the Battle of Worcester (1651), on September 3, he was taken prisoner at the Battle of Dunbar by English troops under the command of Oliver Cromwell. Daniel was among 5,000 Scottish prisoners forced to march to imprisonment at Durham Cathedral. 2,000 died en route, 1,600 more died at Durham before the end of October. 1651, October 20 – Parliament orders the Scottish prisoners to be sent to New England as indentured slaves. and the humiliating defeat by England and the Anglican takeover of Scotland’s strong Presbyterianism, Daniel was sent to the Colonies on 11/11/1651, aboard the ship John and Sarah at Gravesend, London. Recorded in the ship’s manifest as “Dan: Mackhoe.” as a prisoner of Cromwell. December of 1651, he arrived in Boston and subsequently sold by Thomas Kemble of Charles Town to John Giffard, the agent for the Undertakers of The Iron Works of Lynn (now Saugus), to work at hard labor. By March of 1657, Daniel was known to be free and living under the name Daniel Cone in Connecticut. He originally came to the Massachusetts Colony where he married Mahitable Spencer and remained until sometime before 1657 when he was mentioned in a letter from John Winthrop, Governor of the Connecticut Colony, to Peter Stuyvesant, Governor of New Netherlands. From Massachusetts Bay Company, the town established at 30 Mile Island was named Haddam, after Haddam, England. In May, 1662, Daniel was granted land along the Connecticut River in Haddam, Connecticut. The land had been purchased by the General Legislature from the Wangunk Indians earlier in the year. The first settlers were twenty-eight men and their families from Hartford, Wethersfield and Windsor: land across the Conneticut River from the King. It is still known as Haddam. Below it is East Haddam. He had a farm on both sides of the river and every four years he would switch his crops from one side to the other to give the soil a rest. Daniel became a Town Commissioner and held several other offices. His son and grandsons were also active in politics and were members of the Colonial Legislature.
East Haddam, CT
Originally there were two small settlements on the west bank of the river, the Town Plot was laid out along the southern end of what is presently Walkley Hill Road and extended to the old burying ground (Burial Yard at Thirty Mile Island Plantation) and the Lower Plantation was settled south of the Mill Creek in the area now known as Shailerville. Each proprietor was given a home lot and land for farming. There was also land set aside for a meetinghouse and ministers lot. In October 1668 town was incorporated and given the name Haddam after Much Hadham in England. Haddam had very little tillable agricultural land and the best farming land was located along the river. Early residents utilized all of the natural resources available to them including water, fish, timber and granite in order to survive. The Connecticut River was a major source of income and transportation for the first 200 years of the town existence. Shipyards were built along the river, while many other small tributaries provided waterpower for mills and eventually factories. In 1685 a group of residents moved across the river to settle East Haddam including the Gates, Ackley and Bates families. In 1700 East Haddam formed their own ecclesiastical society and became a separate town in 1734. Haddam Neck, which is also located on the east side of the river, was settled around 1712 but remained a part of Haddam and continues so today.
Plantation at Thirty Mile Island: In 1660 the Connecticut Colonial Legislature sent Matthew Allyn and Samuel Willys down the Connecticut River from Hartford to purchase land from the Wangunk Indian Tribe at the place the English called 'Land of Thirty Mile Island'. The island, now known as Haddam Island was thought to be thirty miles from the mouth of the "Grate River" at Long Island Sound (it is only 17 miles from the mouth of river). In May 1662 the Englishmen finally purchased land comprising approximately 104 square miles and extending in six miles on each side of the river from the straits at "Pattyquonck" (now Chester) to the Mattabeseck-Mill River (now Middletown) across to the line of Chatham (now East Hampton). The English paid 30 coats (worth approximately $100) for the land from four Native American chiefs, two queens and others. The Native Americans did set aside some property for their own use including 40 acres at Cove Meadow (Chester) and Haddam Island as well reserving the right to hunt and fish where they pleased.

1~Samuel Cone B: 02/12/1766 Bolton, Tolland, CT D: 01/25/1848 Bolton, Tolland, CT. M: Susannah Hutchinson, 1769-1853. Samuel was buried in the Sardis Cemetery. The Family migrated to Georgia in the 1820s. The Cone and Van Pelt families came to Missionary Station (near Coosa, Georgia) and were early members of Sardis Presbyterian Church (est. 1836). Missionary Station was an early mission to the Cherokees established by Presbyterian missionaries from Connecticut. The Cones were a Scottish family that were among the original founders of Haddam, Connecticut. Samuel and Susannah Cone and their sons, Reuben and Gilbert, came to Decatur, Georgia (near Atlanta), in the 1820s. Reuben became a Judge and was one of the founding fathers of Atlanta where Cone Street bears his name. After President Jackson ignored the Supreme Court and the Constitution and allowed Georgia to remove the Cherokees, Gilbert acquired 160 acres in the vicinity of the church at Missionary Station. Gilbert, along with his wife Caroline, daughter Frances, and his parents, moved to the property, acquired more land, and established a cotton plantation.
1~Samuel Cone 1787-1851
2~Judge Reuben Cone 1788-1851 M: 1824 Lucinda Shumate 1796-1872, and moved to Atlanta where he was one of the original Town Commissioners and Justice of the Inferior Court of DeKalb County. He was an early pioneer and served on an education committee in 1823. He began serving as a justice of the inferior court there in February 1825. This was at a time when Decatur consisted of a dozen log cabins. This important section of 202½ acres includes all of the current Fairlie-Poplar district and Centennial Olympic Park was originally granted to a Jane Doss of Jackson County, Georgia who sold it a year later, in 1826 to Matthew Henry of Gwinnett for $50. Henry held onto it for twelve years and sold it to Judge Cone for $300. The spike that Stephen Harriman Long drove into the ground to mark the terminus of the Western and Atlantic Railroad lay within Judge Cone's Land Lot 78, an event which led to the foundation of the city of Atlanta. When selling off his large land holdings, he would divvy up small lots and sell them for low prices to encourage more people to settle in the young town. Also in 1848, Judge Cone donated a section of his land along Marietta street for the First Presbyterian church (this lot is now part of the State Bar of Georgia building) which was completed by Richard Peters in 1852. He is buried at Oakland Cemetery and remembered by the naming of Cone Street in downtown Atlanta.

After the Civil War and after Frances’ parents, Gilbert and Caroline, joined her grandfather, Samuel, in Sardis Cemetery, Frances moved in with her daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law, John Wesley Brown, on the Cone property. Alvin moved to Texas and James moved to Morrilton, Arkansas, where he met and married Minnie Corinth Fitzhenry in 1881. James and Corinth had a son, Herbert Newton Van Pelt, born in 1882. Frances remained on the plantation in Georgia until the boll weevil scourge of the 1920s when she and the Brown family joined Alvin Van Pelt in Texas. She died in 1928 at the age of 96 with many of her love ones at her side after a life of much joy and sorrow.
James “Newton” Van Pelt and his younger brothers, Alsam and John, came from Lincoln County, North Carolina, in the early 1840s and acquired land in Chattooga County not far from the church. Many of his neighbors and members of the church were also from Lincoln County. When Newton returned from the Mexican War, a mature 28 year old, he married Gilbert and Caroline Cone’s 18 year old daughter, Frances Alvina Hutchinson Cone, in 1851. Newton and Frances had three children, Elizabeth, Alvin, and James Alexander, before Newton went off with the 6th Calvary to fight the Yankees and sadly die in a POW camp.1~Frances Elizabeth Van Pelt 1851-1939 M: 1872 John Wesley Brown 1848-19241~Oscar Daniel Brown 1873–19382~Edgar Hudson Brown 1876–19513~James Larkin Brown 1883–1970

He acquired his father’s farm in 1790 and ten years later built the Federal-style house at what is now 25 Hebron Road. The house‘s rear ell appears to be much earlier, dating perhaps to c. 1755. Cone could only afford to live in the grand house for four years, eventually selling it and moving to New Hampshire. The historic house is located at 25 Hebron Road in Bolton, Connecticut. Probably built around the turn of the 19th century but also including an older ell, it is one of the rural community's finest examples of Federal period architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. For about eight years the house was a bed and breakfast until it closed in 2003.

5~James Phinney Baxter I B: 03/31/1831 Gorham, Maine D: 05/08/1921 Portland, Cumberland County, Maine M1: Mehetable Cummings Proctor 1837-1914. He was an American businessman, historian, civic leader, and benefactor of Portland, Maine. He was mayor of Portland for six years, and the moving spirit behind Baxter Boulevard, a tree-lined road that circles the edge of Back Cove, which is often used for exercise and recreation. He was also recognized as an authority on New England history, and among his other interests, he was president of the Maine Historical Society and an overseer of Bowdoin College, and connected with many other organizations that furthered the interests of New England history.
One of James greatest literary and historical achievements was the editing of twenty of the twenty four volumes of The Documentary History of Maine. Baxter also devoted several years to unearthing the details of Capt. Christopher Levett's settlement at Portland in 1623–1624. An English sea captain and explorer, Levett's history and the details of the colony he attempted to found had been largely forgotten when Baxter's scholarship illuminated them. Baxter later published a book about Levett, which incorporated the text of Levett's own earlier work, published in 1628 in London. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1915.

Atlanta, GA
Judge Reuben Cone 1788-1851, came to Decatur, Georgia (6 miles east of what was to become Atlanta), in 1823 when there were just a few log cabins. He was one of the original Town Commissioners and Justice of the Inferior Court of DeKalb County. Judge Cone acquired several hundred acres of land upon which Atlanta was to be built (Land Lot 78). The spike that was driven to mark the terminus of the Western and Atlantic Railroad lied within his property. “Terminus” was the original name for Atlanta. Judge Cone divided the land into small lots to encourage persons to settle in the new town. He laid off Marietta Street, planting trees on either side and in the median. He built his first home on the northeast corner of Marietta and Cone Streets. The house was later expanded and became the impressive Arlington Hotel. He had almost completed his new home on the south side of Marietta at the head of Cone Street when he died in 1851. The house would become an Atlanta landmark known as the “Austell Mansion” until it was demolished years later. Judge Cone earlier had given the land next to his new home site for the 1st Presbyterian Church of which he and his wife, Lucinda (Shumate) Cone, were founding members. Judge Cone and his family, including his mother Susannah Cone, are buried under a substantial monument in historic Oakland Cemetery. Susannah had moved to Atlanta after her husband, Samuel Cone, died in Coosa, Georgia, in 1848.

October 1910, an ancient and imposing landmark disappeared when the Arlington Hotel, at Marietta and Cone streets, next door to the Georgia Railway and Electric Company, was torn down to make way for the three story Hayden Building. The Arlington, a three story brick structure with large front porches on both the first and second floors, was built as a residence before the war of the 1860's by Mrs. Reuben Cone, widow of the Judge. Later it became the residence of her son-in-law, Judge Julius A Hayden, and after his removal to Florida in 1877, became a boarding house and hotel.

Millington
Millington was first settled in 1704 by Jonathan Beebe of New London. An ecclesiastical society separate from Haddam (East Haddam was then part of Haddam) was granted in 1733. The congregational church was organized in 1736 and a meetinghouse constructed on the Green in 1740. The village became a training area for the local militia during the Revolutionary War. The village never recovered from a depression following the War of 1812 and is now a rural residential neighborhood.

East Haddam
The first settlement of East Haddam was begun at Creek Row, about the year 1670, over two hundred years ago. The first house, it is said, stood a few rods northeast of the site where Mason Gates' house now stands. Quite a number of houses were erected in this vicinity, and were occupied by the Gateses, the Brainards, and the Cones.

About six years afterward, the privileges of a town were granted this colony, and the tract was called Haddam, from Haddam in England. This was about the 20th town founded in the State. No settlement was made on the east side of the river till some two years later, or about 1670. All the inhabitants on both sides of the river formed one society until 1700, when they formed two societies, but it was not till 1734 that the town was divided agreeably to the divisions of the societies; the west society retaining the name of Haddam, while the east took the name of East Haddam. The first settlement of East Haddam was begun at Creek Row, about the year 1670, more than 200 years ago. The first house, it is said, stood a few rods northeast of the site where Mason Gates' house now stands. Quite a number of houses were erected in this vicinity, and were occupied by the Gates, the Brainerds and the Cones, and the same family names are peculiar to this neighborhood.

Dr. Jonah Cone was a practicing physician in the town for a period of forty years and was a very estimable as well as a popular man. He was the brother of Joshua Cone, who was the father of Judge Hiram Cone, who died in Georgia during the year 1860, at which time he was judge of the Supreme Court of that State. Joshua Cone had two other sons, who were graduates from Yale College, one of whom became quite prominent in the legal profession, the other died soon after leaving college.

RED MILL: the "Red Mill," is located in the center of the village of Moodus. In size it is 36 by 100 feet, with detached picker-room, is two stories high, with basement, and is operated by a turbine wheel 30 inches in diameter under a head of 21 feet. In the basement of this mill are located the works of the Moodus Machine Company, where general repairs for the mills are made, and machine building is carried on to some extent. The two stories above are devoted to the manufacture of hard laid twine, and produce about 3,300 pounds per week, of all sizes, from nine threads to cord suitable for clothes lines. The Hon. William E. CONE, who for a period of 25 years was the bookkeeper and general manager of the affairs of the company, was born in 1805. Mr. CONE entered the employ of the concern in 1842, and remained until 1867; twice he has served in the General Assembly and twice in the State Senate.

THE UNION MANUFACTURING COMPANY: The old grist mill which was located at this place, was a fixed institution for many years. When and by whom it was built is unknown; but from all information it always presented that worn-out tumble-down appearance, which is sufficient evidence of antiquity. There was also a saw mill here, which was operated for several years, and was probably the first mill of the kind in this portion of East Haddam. In 1829, a company was organized, composed of the following gentlemen: Noah Bulkley, William Palmer, Aaron C. Palmer, Joseph W. Cone, Augustus Olmstead, Lemuel Dickinson, and Asa Smith, who, under the firm name of "The Union Manufacturing Company," commenced the manufacture of cotton yearn at this place. A dam was erected near the mouth of the small pond, and a suitable building was constructed on the site of the old grist mill, which had been removed. The amount of the capital stock actually paid in March 4th 1830, was $17,000; and at that time the company had introduced looms, and were making cotton shirtings.
THE MOODUS MANUFACTURING COMPANY: The canal right was purchased from Mr. Sylvester Cone. The concern was ready for operation in 1849, and the making of spool thread was begun in that year. This was continued to 1851, when the manufacture of print goods was commenced, with 48 looms, the number being subsequently increased to 96.

Emory Johnson Homestead
On Johnsonville Road in Moodus, East Haddam, is an Italianate-style house built (according to the sign on the house) in 1842. It was the home of Emory Johnson, who owned twine mills near the Johnson Mill Pond across from his home. In the nineteenth century, Moodus was the “Twine Capital of America,” with twelve mills in operation. Johnson’s father-in-law, Stanton S. Card, owned the Neptune Twine Mills, which he left to his son-in-law at his death in 1867. Johnson had already opened his own mill, called Triton, in 1862. The area of worker housing that grew up around the mills became known as Johnsonville. The two millscontinued to be operated by Emory Johnson and then by his son, E. Emory Johnson, who died in 1905.

NEW YORK NET AND TWINE COMPANY
It is stated elsewhere that from time immemorial a grist mill existed at Bashan, where subsequently stood the factory of the Union Company. The same observation may also be made with reference to the site where now stands what is familiarly known to-day as the "Red Mill," the next one in order, and the first in the United States which manufactured by machinery cotton seine twine. It is believed that Captain Stephen Cone was the original owner of this property, and that he purchased it from the twenty-seven men who bought the town from the Indians; at all events, he is the first of whom any record is given, and he reconstructed and operated the grist mill here. For a long time previous to the Revolutionary war, this property was in the CONE family, and subsequently came into the hands of Jonah Cone, who was a lineal descendant of Captain Stephen CONE. In 1712, Jonah Cone deeded this property to Captain Thomas Gates

Gov. Troup appointed Peter Cone as Surveyor of Bulloch County and William Woodcock as Coroner
This commission was signed by Georgia Governor George M. Troup 189 years ago this month, whereby Gov. Troup appointed Peter Cone as Surveyor of Bulloch County and William Woodcock as Coroner for the county. Since the governor’s office was at the State Capitol in Milledgeville, the county officeholders were allowed to appear before Justice of the Inferior Court and take the required oath and be sworn into office by the Judge of the Inferior Court – in this case, Judge John Wise, JIC BC (Judge Inferior Court, Bulloch County.) Only the sheets bearing the governor’s commission and Peter Cone’s oath are shown.

JARED CONE HOUSE GHOST STORIES
(Published in Bolton Horizons, February 2010)
Bolton militia Captain Thomas Pitkin was a brother to author David Pitkin's direct ancestor, Colonel Joseph Pitkin of East Hartford. David Pitkin is writing a book of New England ghost stories and will be included in our Bolton stories. He asked for details about the Jared Cone house and shared some new stories he had just heard. Brian and Eileen Jennings have owned the house since 2005 and they have given permission to tell you the story. It should be noted that the Jennings and many others we know have never experienced anything like this story, and those in this story were not disturbed by anything they saw. So you need not worry. It is safe to read this story alone in your house without putting on all the lights or checking under your bed.
Samuel Morgan Alvord was the Bolton historian at the Bolton Bicentennial Celebration on September 4, 1920. He gave a short history of the birth of Bolton on the lawn of the Jared Cone house saying, "Deacon Charles N. Loomis, under whose shade trees we are gathered, and his brother William H. Loomis are descendants of the proprietor Thomas Loomis." And so the story begins. Jared Cone Sr. and Christiana Loomis of Bolton were wed on September 19, 1754. The Jared Cone we all know was born to them in 1756. By 1768 Jared Cone Sr. bought the original Loomis farm. The house is just south of the center of Bolton on Hebron Road, somewhat closer to Bolton Center Cemetery than it is to the Congregational Church.
The Lexington alarm of April 19, 1775, is considered the beginning of the Revolutionary War. It started with the ride of Paul Revere and the British attacks on Lexington and Concord. Connecticut records show that 63 men from Bolton marched on the Revolutionary Route to the relief of the Massachusetts Minutemen. That compares with 45 from the much larger city of Hartford. From Bolton, Jonathan Birge (the next door neighbor of Jared Cone) was a captain and 17-year-old Jared Cone was then a lieutenant. The British quickly withdrew to Boston as a wave of 4,000 armed Minutemen swarmed across the Massachusetts countryside and took the heights overlooking Boston and ignited the skies with bonfires.
After American independence was won, young Jared Cone returned to the farm. On January 15, 1784, he married Elisabeth Wells of the prominent Wethersfield family. In 1790 he acquired the farm from his father. In 1800, at age 34, he had the current Jared Cone house built but apparently kept part of the original house because the rear, or ell, of the house appears to be from a much earlier date. It is said that the house was so beautiful and expensive for its time that they could only live in it for four years before they had to sell the farm to pay their debts. The Jared Cone House was the first house in Bolton to be registered on the National Register of Historic Places and not long ago was a bed and breakfast.
Recently Doris Perkins, a genealogist from Saratoga Springs, New York, described her experience at the Jared Cone house to author David Pitkin at one of his book signings. In 1996, she came to Bolton to do research on her ancestors. One of them had married a Cone 200 years ago. Hearing that the Jared Cone house was a nice bed and breakfast, Doris called and made a reservation with proprietor Cinde Smith for herself and her husband. Doris would spend that very night in the house of her distant ancestor. She and her husband were the only guests that night and were given the Blue Room, near the large Palladian window on the front of the house. She remembers, "I dropped off to sleep soon afterward, but awakened after an hour because light was shining in my face. Sitting up, I noticed the bedroom door was open. Apparently, I hadn't fastened the lock securely enough, so I got up, closed the door, inserting the locking pin tightly. Then, back to bed. A few hours later, I sensed the light again, and awoke to see the door was once more open. A bit more puzzled than angry, I got up again to close and lock the door. I returned to bed only after tugging on the latch to be sure the door was firmly secured. Nevertheless, sometime later, the hallway light shining in my face again roused me. Whoever or whatever wanted that door open was welcome to have it their way, I decided. Nobody else was staying over, so I knew we'd have our privacy and dropped off to sleep again. My husband never did wake up to see the strange phenomenon." Doris did not share her tale with Cinde Smith at breakfast the next day and recalled only making a general query about the room. "I recall Mrs. Smith saying offhand that the family had had some kind of difficulty with the door. So, maybe that's all it was, I decided, and didn't pursue the matter."
With the assistance of the Bolton Town Clerk's office, Author David Pitkin was able to locate Cinde Smith, who had closed the B & B in 2003. David shared Doris's tale with her and Cinde Smith thought a moment and replied, "Strangers and out-of-towners only frequented the place for about eight years, and I had only one other guest who ever shared such a story with me. Curiously, that woman's experiences had taken place in the Blue Room also. The woman guest had come to breakfast with raised eyebrows, asking me if I had a ghost. Never having heard such anecdotes before, I asked her why she would ask. 'Well, there's a rocking chair in my room, as you know. I awoke during the night to see it rocking all by itself. I was stunned and pulled the covers over my head, but then went back to sleep. But I know what I saw!' I didn't doubt her, I said, but no other guest had ever mentioned such an incident. I guess Doris hadn't told me of her experiences. But, now that you mention ghosts," she went on, "I recall that my daughter came into the house one evening when she was 17. She wasn't scared, but was more mystified, telling me that she had just seen a woman in white leaning against our signpost out front. Then the figure vanished."
But none of Bolton's official records contain mention of the woman who enjoyed rocking peacefully each night before retiring, who left the bedroom door open to be awakened by dawn's light shining in the beautiful Palladian window, and who would sometimes venture into the front yard at night during the 1990s, curious as to who had placed a Bed & Breakfast signpost in the lawn.
