Brief Gornto Family History: Jamestown to Florida
Brinto, to Gornto and Garnto
Nancy Elizabeth Gornto B: 1833 in Lowndes, GA D: 1916 Alachua Cty, FL. M: 01/12/1851 to Emanuel Waters. Nancy Elizabeth, daughter of David Gornto, son of Nathan Gornto, son of John Jr. son of John Sr.
Seal of the Virginia Company
The Virginia Company dispatched 144 men and boys on three ships which left England in December of 1606 and arrived in Virginia in May 13, 1607. Three English ships The Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery with approximately 144 settlers and sailors, landed and planted the first permanent English colony in North America. Established by the Virginia Company of London this settlement would be called Jamestown, after King James I. On June 15, 1607 the fleet commander Captain Christopher Newport will return to England leaving 104 settlers.
The Susan Constant, at 120 tons, was the largest of the three ships led by Capt. Christopher Newport. She carried 71 colonists and was about 116 feet long. The Godspeed, led by Capt. Bartholomew Gosnold, carried 39 passengers and 13 sailors. She was a 40 ton brigantine about 68 feet long. The Discovery was a 20-ton “fly boat” which took part in six expeditions in search of the Northwest.

Names A-H of 144 Passengers to Virginia in 1607
The Gornto family in America traces back to the founding of Jamestown in 1607 by the Virginia Company. Edward Brinto[n] (Gornto) was the first Gornto ancestor in the new world. Edward is listed among the original settlers of Jamestown as a soldier & a "mason." Additionally, from colonial narratives of the time (Observations By Master George Percy, 1607), he served as a loyal soldier under Captain John Smith. Edward must have known Pocahontas. In fact, during one of Captain Smith's expeditions to Powhatan's people, Edward Brinton was left behind at the Indian Village to shoot birds for Powhatan. Edward is listed as "Grindon" [yet another spelling variant] in Patents Granted to Settlers in Virginia. There, he is listed in 1626 as having 150 planted acres by patent in the territory of Tappahama, over against James' Cittie. Edward went on to have two sons (William and John).
John Smith's Jamestown Map of 1607
Both brothers are listed in the "Quit Rent Rolls" for Virginia in 1704. They are listed as Wm Grinto, of Princess Anne County, and John Gornto respectively, sworn to before Will Robinson Clerk in April 1705. It is from William's family that most Gorntos draw their lineage. William had a son name John who according to Virginia Apprentice records was a shoemaker in Princess Anne Cty, VA. His son John (Jr.) married Rhoda Jarrott and eventually moved to Onslow Cty, NC some time after the Revolutionary War (appx. 1785-1790).
John Jr.'s son Nathaniel Gornto married Easter Burnett (16 Oct. 1802). Nathaniel's sister married Easter Burnett's brother and became the first Gorntos to move to Georgia. Nathaniel and Easter soon sold most of their land in North Carolina and moved to Georgia. They lived in Bulloch, Lowndes and Irwin Counties in Georgia. Most of the contemporary Gorntos are descended from Nathaniel and his family. A number of Nathaniel's descendants eventually made their way into Florida...

John Norden's 1593 map of London
1~Edward Brinto Gornto B: London England. (Elizabethan England often conjures images of the Royal Court with splendid costumes, banquets and extravagant entertainment. But for many people life was very different. During the 16th Century the population rose dramatically and this, added to other economic pressures, meant that an increasing number of people were unable to support themselves. Elizabethan England faced a mounting economic problem as the poor became poorer, and a growing army of vagabonds and beggars roamed the streets and countryside. In an attempt to curb the problem, the government passed a series of strict Poor Laws. country was also hit by a number of poor harvests, particularly in the 1590s, which put increasing pressure on a limited supply of food. The resulting rise in food prices led, in some cases, to starvation amongst those who could not afford to pay. It is, however, a tribute to their lasting success that two of the Acts, from 1597 and 1601, endured until well into the nineteenth Century). On May 14, 1607, the Jamestown Settlement Colony was established on the mainland of North America. Arrived on three ships, the Susan Constant, the Discovery and the Godspeed. Edward Brinto arrived and was a mason & soldier at the Colony. The name has gone through many adjustments: Brinto, to Gornto and Garnto.
