M: 1475 Elizabeth Eve verch Gwillian B: 1453 Llangathen, Carmarthen, Wales D: 1544 Friary, Wales. He was a Welsh soldier and landholder who rose to prominence during the Wars of the Roses, and was instrumental in the victory of Henry Tudor at the Battle of Bosworth. He remained a faithful supporter of Henry and was rewarded with lands and offices in South Wales. In 1461, when Rhys ap Thomas’ grandfather Gruffydd ap Nicholas was killed fighting for the Lancastrian cause under Jasper Tudor, the Earl of Pembroke, at the battle of Mortimer’s Cross in the defeat inflicted by Edward, Earl of March, Edward’s father had also been killed a few weeks before. Within a few weeks, Edward was made King Edward IV, and the main Lancastrian armies were crushed at the Battle of Towton in Yorkshire. He was also a Privy Councillor and in 1505 he was made a Knight of the Garter, which he celebrated with a great tournament at Carew Castle in 1507. Rhys’s estates and offices were meant to pass to his grandson and heir Rhys ap Gruffydd, however they were taken by the Crown and given to Lord Ferrers for life. Rhys ap Gruffydd was later beheaded by Henry VIII in 1531 for treason after fighting Ferrers and provoking civil unrest amongst the citizens of Carmarthen who were still angry about the disinheritance. Sir Rhys ap Thomas was knighted for his services; rewarded with vast estates; and was appointed Chamberlain of South Wales. In recognition of his continued support Sir Rhys ap Thomas was made a Knight of the Garter by King Henry VII on 22nd April 1505. During April 1507 Sir Rhys ap Thomas celebrated becoming a Knight of the Garter by holding The Great Tournament at Carew Castle, Pembrokeshire. The tournament attracted 600 nobles, lasted five days and was the last tournament ever held in Britain.

2~George Washington Thomas 1844-1907 M: Civility Gaskins 1852-1873. Born in 1844, George Washington Thomas arrived just 8 months before Florida gained statehood. The frontier to which he was born had seen two Florida-Indian wars, English ownership, Spanish ownership, and invasion by U.S. troops in its last 50 years, but the second half of the 19th century would bring more changes than anyone could’ve ever imagined. George enlisted in Company I, Florida 1st Infantry Regiment, CSA, 05/21/1864. At the close of the war, he would return safely to his home in Union County, but his father in law, Thomas Gaskins, was not as fortunate. He succumbed to wounds received in battle in nearby Baker County in 1864. He was mustered out in 1865. He was active in and nurtured the surrounding community and left a long line of descendants to carry his memory. In August of 1907 at 63 years old, he deeded this piece of land for a community church, schoolhouse, and cemetery. Although building began shortly after, George would pass away in November of that year, never having seen the finished product. As the story goes, the community thought he should have one service in the place he cared so much about, so his casket was laid cross-wise along the exposed floor beams of the half-finished church. His was the first burial at the cemetery.
