Swango History - Hazel Green
1~Wilhelm Schwangau/Swango, B: 1680, the area of Schwangau, Bavaria, Germany. D: M:
1~Wilhelm Schwangau/William Swango Jr B: 1700 Schwangau, Ostallgäu, Bavaria, Germany D: 1747 PA M: Mary Agnes Oesing B: 1705 Bavaria, Germany D: 1747, while crossing the Atlantic Ocean and was buried at sea. The family migrated from Germany, probably on "The Saint Andrew" ship on October 20th 1747. The ship's sailing originated in Rotterdam, Holland via Leith, Scotland and was captained by James Abercrombie.acob signed the oath of allegiance as "Jacob Schwanger." Sea Captain James Abercrombie (1717-1760) was born 22 December 1717 at Dundee, Scotland, third son of James Abercrombie and Janet Maxwell. He sailed regularly to Philadelphia, Charleston, South Carolina and Cowes, England beginning in 1742 as master of the ship Lydia. The Lydia was plundered at sea by French ships in July 1744 after which it was taken at sea by the Spanish in August 1744. In October 1744 the SC Gazette reported that the sea captain had been returned to Charleston along with Alexander Abercromby, brother of the South Carolina attorney general, following an exchange of prisoners with the Spanish at Havana, Cuba. From 1748 to 1753 James Abercrombie (1717-1760) was master of the ship St. Andrew, and from 1754 to 1755 of the Peggy. The St. Andrew was a three-masted ship with square sails and a square-sterned galley- type hull design of about 150 tons. Built 1733 in Philadelphia. Fitted with accommodation for passengers including compartments. Transported emigrants mostly from Rotterdam to Philadelphia from 1734 to 1752. Owned by 3 London merchants, managed by Charles & Alexander Stedman, Second Street, Philadelphia. He made his final voyage to Charleston from Madeira, arriving in April 1760 on the Charming Peggy and leaving in June for Scotland. On 30 October 1760 his ship and all the crew were lost in the German Ocean near the mouth of the River Elbe. The name Swango has been anglicized from the German name Schwangau, which means "swan land." William's wife died on the journey to America and was buried at sea. William and Abraham landed at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and shortly after thereafter, William died. Abraham, then only 14 years of age, was apprenticed to a wagon maker, whom he served until age 21. He became a wagon maker by trade.

Rebecca Elma, Mary Pearl, and Louverna Frances were playing in a field near the house on Buck Creek on July 18, 1897, along with their beloved family cat. As children will do, they were having a wonderful time and none of them were paying any attention to the weather. A storm suddenly came up and they all ran under an apple tree in the orchard. Even their cat. Lightening struck the tree and killed Mary Pearl, age 9, Louverna Frances, age 4, and their cat. Rebecca Elma age 12 at the time, was critically injured but did survive. She was never healthy again and died in 1908. Sarah Caroline never did recover from her grief of loosing her girls.

(A beautiful brunette with a soulful gaze, Jean Paige (born Lucile Beatrice O'Hair), made twenty-one films in a career which began in 1917 and concluded in 1924. Her films include Blind Man's Holiday (1917), The Count and the Wedding Guest (1918) and Schools and Schools (1918), and Daring Hearts (1919). She came to prominence in a Vitagraph film called Too Many Crooks (1919). The Darkest Hour (1919), The Birth of a Soul(1920), Black Beauty (1921). In her final film, Captain Blood(1924). Paige co-starred with J. Warren Kerrigan in the 11-reel version of Rafael Sabatini's Captain Blood. It was Paige's uncle, Colonel Bishop (Wilfred North), who purchased young Irish physician Peter Blood (who had been exiled to slavery in Barbados) because she had fallen in love with him. The film was produced by Albert E. Smith), the founder of the pioneering Vitagraph company. As Charlotte Brown she made a star part out of a bit part. Jean never appeared on stage and had no experience in movies prior to becoming a Vitagraph leading woman. Her first screen appearance came in O.Henry features on two reels. Her role in Too Many Crooks led Vitagraph President Albert E. Smith to elevate her position at the film studio.

In 1760, Abraham married Ailsie Pyle in the Old Swedes Church in Wilmington, Delaware. Ailsie was born in Ireland and lived in the Mt. Vernon neighborhood at the time of her marriage to Abraham. In both Pennsylvania and Virginia, Abraham has Pyle neighbors. His wife, Alisie Pyle was a Quaker, as evidenced by some records in both PA and VA. She probably is the descendant of the Pyle family that came from England with William Penn. Abraham and Ailsie lived in Frederick County, Virginia after their marriage. In 1769 he signed the lease with George Washington for property in Frederick County. Virginia.

The lease called for building of buildings, clearing of land, setting fruit trees all according to a plan laid down by Washington. George Washington considered Germans as the finest of farmers and therefore he had a rather large number of them on his various land holdings throughout Virginia. Abraham migrated to Kentucky around 1785 with Ailsie and their four sons and three daughters. Samuel, Abraham and Ailsie's oldest son, stopped in the area of Red River, present Powell County, because of the excellent hunting. The remainder of the family, including their son James who we are descended from, moved on to near Lexington where they remained for two years. Then they migrated on to present Gallatin Cty, Kentucky where Abraham and Ailsie are both buried a short distance from Warsaw.
