Written in Latin on John's tomb: Here lies John Nasmyth, of the family of Posso, an honourable family of Tweedale, a citizen of Edinburgh, chief surgeon to his most Serene Majesty and to the King of France's troop of guards from Scotland - having excellently performedall the duties of a godly life; who dying at London to the grief of both nations, in the exercise of office with his Majesty, ordered his body to be conveyed hither (such was his love to his country), to be buried in this dormitory; acquiting himself to his King, his country and his friends by the utmost of his power and duty. He died in the 57th year of his age, the 10th of September 1613. Why is it grievous to return whence you came?

Dawyck, or Dawic, Castle is thought to have been built in the 13th century by the Veitch family. A William le Vache signed the Ragman Rolls in 1296, and while he is not specifically named as “of Dawyck”, Veitch family tradition has it that Dawyck was his seat. The Veitch family were originally Normans who arrived in England with William the Conqueror, before later spreading to Scotland. The first Veitch to be designated as “of Dawyck” seems to be William’s grandson, Barnabas le Vache de Dawyk, who was born at Dawyck in 1370 and died there in 1436. The tower house of Dawyck belonged from the 14th to the late 17th centuries to the Veitch family, who towards the end of their tenure began the tradition of planting exotic species in the policies of the house when they established groves of the newly-introduced horse chestnut. During the 16th and 17th centuries the Veitch family had a feud with their neighbours the Tweedie family of Drumelzier. The Veitch family owned the Dawyck estate from 1370 to 1691. In 1691 the Naesmyth family took over the estate, Sir James Naesmyth, 2nd Baronet of Dawyck and Posso (1704–1779); his grandson, Sir John Murray Naesmyth (1803–1876). Sir James Naesmyth, 3rd Baronet, 1763-1829, M: M1: Elenor Naesmyth M2: Harriet Naesmyth, and acquired in 1789 the old glebe of the parish from the ministers of Stobo and Drumelzier. The 4-acre glebe, which lay south-west of the church, carried pasturage rights for a horse, two cows, and forty sheep. John Murray 4th Baronet Nasmyth (1803-) and Mary Majoribanks 1807-, their son James 5th Baronet Naesmyth, 1827 - 1896 M1: Eliza Gordon Brodie 1837-. M2: Agnes Carus Bevan Wilson B: 1827 in Scotland. In 1897 the estate was purchased by Mrs Alexander Balfour.
Dawyck House 1864
An engraving of 1864 showing the entrance front of the Burn house before it was extended.
In 1837 the ruins were demolished by the lawyer Sir John Murray Naesmyth to make way for the present chapel, also used as the family mausoleum. The chapel still contains a probable medieval font, and the chapel bell is said to carry a date of 1642, being recast in 1791.
The Balfour family began as farmers and church elders in Fife, where they can be traced back to 1649. In about 1785, Alexander Balfour 1765-1855, the second son of James Balfour of Kilmany, was apprenticed to a merchant in Dundee, and after completing his term he set up in business in partnership with his friend John Bell. The firm of Bell & Balfour prospered, and in due course both the partners served as Provost of Dundee. His son, Alexander Balfour married a woman twenty years his junior in 1864 and produced seven children over the following twenty years, but all of them were minors when he died of cancer in 1886. His widow promptly rented Mount Alyn, and about 1896 sold it and purchased the Dawyck estate in Peeblesshire in her native Scotland.
Mount Alyn
At the time, the house at Dawyck was probably not much larger than Mount Alyn, although the estate was a great deal bigger. In 1897 the estate was purchased by Mrs Alexander Balfour, and she commissioned the architect John Archibald Campbell to to double the size of the house with north and south additions in a style that closely matches Burn's original design. He extended the house to the north of the original entrance, concluding on the north side with a two-storey canted bay window in front of a three-storey crowstepped double gable, and on the garden side with a double gable and arcaded veranda, while to the south he enlarged the service accommodation. Campbell also designed the picturesque North Lodge, with a timber-gabled entrance porch supported by red sandstone columns. Inside, the house has oak panelling and discreet Gothic decoration. The best spaces are the wide oak-panelled circular stair, and the billiard room (in the Campbell extension), which has a Gothic lincrusta paper ceiling by Leonard Grandison. Upstairs some of the bedroom doors are finished with panels of yew, presented in 1934 to Col. F.R.S. Balfour (1873-1945) by the future King Edward VIII. In 1909 she commissioned Sir Robert Lorimer to add extensions to the house. Frederick Robert Stephen Balfour (1873-1945), after spending four years in America as a young man, forged a career in London's finance sector, and in 1923, on his mother's death, inherited Dawyck. He became a Fellow of the Linnean Society and in 1927 was awarded the prestigious Victoria Medal for Horticulture. When he died in 1945, Dawyck passed to his only son, Colonel Alexander Norman Balfour (1909-96), who married the BBC radio and television announcer, Elizabeth Cowell. They had no children, but adopted a son and daughter, who grew up at Dawyck. Colonel Balfour, due to the unaffordable cost of restoring the woodland and gardens after damage from storms and frost in the 1960s and 1970s led the family to gift the gardens of Dawyck House to the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh in 1978. The Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh opened them to the public in 1984 when restoration was largely complete. The house remained in the occupation of the family until at least 1992, when it was offered for sale. The Balfour family retain ownership of the wider estate, which is now vested in Dawyck Estates Ltd.

Greyfriars Churchyard
The Tomb of John Naesmyth
Greyfriars Churchyard is one of the most interesting places in Edinburgh. The National Covenant was signed there by the Protestant nobles and gentry of Scotland in 1638. The prisoners taken at the battle of Bothwell Brig were shut up there in 1679, and, after enduring great privations, a portion of the survivors were sent off to Barbadoes. When I first saw the tombstone, an ash tree was growing out of the top of the main body of it, though that has since been removed. In growing, the roots had pushed out the centre stone, which has not been replaced. The tablet over it contains the arms of the family, the broken hammer-shafts, and the motto "Non arte sed marte." There are the remains of a very impressive figure, apparently rising from her cerements. The body and extremities remain, but the head has been broken away. There is also a remarkable motto on the tablet above the tombstone -- "Ars mihi vim contra Fortunce; which I take to be, "Art is my strength in contending against Fortune."
